Money Trees - Photo Shoot

For the song 'Money Trees' I am planning to take pictures to go with the quotes..

'Everybody gon' respect the shooter

But the one infront of the gun lives forever'

and "Money trees is the perfect place for shade'

My original plan for the 1st quote was to have my model Holly staring straight down the camera aiming end of the prop gun towards the lens. This shot was also going to have a second person in it who where un-able to see. (As we would be viewing them from behind so we would not be able to see their face or emotions). The second person would be the victim in this picture as the set up would look like they where about to get shot.
This photoshoot did not go to plan, as I was unable to arrange a second model for the day that I had the studio booked. Meaning that I had to improvise and still try and get a picture that would go well with the quote. 

To take these pictures I used 3 different cameras. I used my digital camera, my iPhone camera and also a disposable camera.

Above is the contact sheet of all the pictures I took for 'Money Trees' on the camera. From looking at these you can notice how some of the images are really dark and then how a set few are over exposed. This has happened because whilst trying to capture the falling money I thought it would be a good idea to have the camera on continuous / burst mode. I thought this would be a good idea to capture the fast falling money, but the studio lighting couldn't flash as fast as the camera could take pictures. So some of the pictures came out really dark and some of them came out really over exposed.

Out of all the pictures that I took on my camera these are my favourite... 

Although this picture is really dark and hard to see I do like it. I like the fan style that the money is being held in, and also her attitude, the way she has her and in her pocket and the glare that she is making. Although this picture doesn't really go with any of the quotes that I have chosen, there may be a a quote in the song that I could take to go with this image. 

I also like this photo, again the way my model is holding the money and the glare that she is holding with the camera, but I think that this picture doesn't have the same 'gangster' feel to it. I'm not sure if it's because it's a brighter image, but I feel that this picture is too 'nice' 

Here are some videos that I took on my iPhone whilst in the studio. I recorded these in the slowmotion setting to capture the money falling, meaning I could take screen shots from the video when it's moving slowly. For some reason when I uploaded them on to this blog the slow motion doesn't work and the video just plays at normal speed.

I didn't get a whole lot of images for this quote. I wasn't best pleased with how the images had turned out. I had such good plans for these pictures and things went wrong one after the other. I thought that this was going to be more simple than it really was.

Out of the pictures that I've got on my phone these where my favourite... 

This image is a screen shot taken from a slow motion video recorded in the studio.
Although these images are blurry, and the lighting isn't all that good but I like the money has been captured falling around her. I do wish that the money was falling all around her instead of more to the left. I also think it would have looked better if the note that was floating in front of her was a £50 note instead of a £5 note. Out of all of the screen shots I've got this was one of the images that captured the money falling best.

I also like the way the money is falling in this picture. Although I wish there was more of it visible as some of the falling money is covered by my models hair.
I think that both of these images are appropriate to go with the quote.. "Money trees is the perfect place for shade'
I think the fact that the lighting is quote dark also plays on the fact that the lyrics are talking about shade. 

I don't yet have the contact sheet for the pictures taken on my disposable camera. I will upload them once I have them. 

My original plan for the second quote was to go out on location to take my images. I was going to have my model Holly posing in front of a tree (because the quote says money trees) and then I was going to to throw loads of fake money into the shot to make it look like the money was falling from the tree. Although this plan was easier said than done. I was unable to go trough with these plans as it snowed meaning that I would not be able to throw my fake money out side or it would get ruined. 

To work around this I decide that these pictures would have to be take in the studio. This is the only place that is guaranteed to be dry meaning I can pick-up and re trough the money as many times as I needed to get the right shot.

Although these pictures are different to my description when I had a quick couple of minutes in the studio I took a few snaps of the prop gun. I thought that these could be quite a powerful shots on their own. I feel that a picture of just the gun, captioned with the quote 'But the one infront of the gun lives forever' will be simplistic yet will be made strong and given meaning once captioned with this quote. 
I took these quick few snaps with my Cannon 600D and the studio lighting was on the most basic set up with just one soft box on the left and facing it to add even lighting. I needed to take these images quick to save time, as I running behind on some of my photoshoots due to delays and problems. 

The Art Of Peer Pressure - Photo Shoot

For the song 'The Art Of Peer Pressure' I was planning to take pictures to go with the quotes...

'Hot-boxing like George Foreman grilling the masses of the working world'

and 'I got the blunt in my mouth, usually I'm drug-free
But shit I'm with the homies'

This ended up changing sightly as instead of using the quote..

I ended up using the quote.. 

'Me and the homies (just riding)' 

This plan ended up changing as I was unable to follow trough with my plans. My original plan was to take some pictures for the 'Hot-boxing' quote on location. (My friends shed in their back garden). I was also going to ask a few more people to come round to get numbers up, so it appeared that there was a group of friends hanging around together. Each of these would then be smoking a cigaret rolled to look like a 'joint'. I was then going to ask each of them to take in a large drag and then all blow out at the same time to create the illusion of a smokey hotbox. 

This ended up changing, as I was unable to use the location as planned due to my friends circumstances. This was an unfortunate event for me as this is something I wouldn't be able to do out side, this is something I could only do inside. 

Because of this I decided to change my plan and instead of using this quote I changed it to the quote 

'Me and the homies (just riding)' instead. 

I had decided that although I couldn't create my hot-box images I still wanted these pictures to be related to smoking. So my second idea was to create light drawings with the cigaret's rolled to look like 'joint's'. 

I ended up taking these pictures over the park, as this is a place where teenagers are associated with hanging around at night to drink and take drugs ect.. 

For these pictures I only used my camera. I did this because it was freeing and I wanted to get these pictures taken as soon as possible.

I really like this picture for the quote..

Although this is rolled with normal papers and not a blunt wrap I think that this is a good image for the quote as you can clearly see the 'joint' being held in their hand. I also like how the smoke coming off the cigaret is really visible. This then shows that it's burning/ being smoked.

I love how the light drawing in this picture has created an almost perfect love-heart. Although the heart isn't really relevant to my work we where just experimenting trying to create different shapes and I'm really pleased with the way that this one has come out. Although I think it't funny how you can see my dogs face on the right hand side. 

I also really like the way the light drawing has turned out in this image, I like the spiral effect that had been created. I think that this image will work well for the quote..

I think that this will work better for this quote as they are not holding the 'joint' so the quote..'I got the blunt in my mouth, usually I'm drug-free'wouldn't really work well.

although this is at the end of the smoke I really like this picture and the way you can see the smoke coming off the end of her nails and how you can see light movement throughout the picture.I also like how it is close up so you can see more detail in the picture. 

This picture is not one that I had taken for this assignment, it was just in my folder from some previous work that I had done. Although it wasn't initially taken for this assignment I am thinking about using it as this work is similar to the other pictures I have taken for this. I think that this picture would work well for the quote..

'Me and the homies (just riding)' 

I have realised that I have two similar pictures, that I would like to use for the same quote. I like both of these pictures but can only use one for the quote 'Me and the homies (just riding)', because of this I've decided to add another quote thats similar meaning that I will be able to use both of them. 

The other quote that I have decided to add is.. 

'But shit, I'm with the homies'

This means that I will now be able to use both pictures instead of having to choose between them, and also that I will have an extra image to go towards my final 35. 

Backseat Freestyle - Photo Shoot

On Monday I did my 1st photo-shoot for this assignment with my model Holly.
This photo-shoot was for the song 'Backseat Freestyle', my idea was to take a quote from this song, and then create a picture that would turn this quote into a caption.
The quote I was using for this song was..

"I got 25 lighters on my dresser, yes sir.

Put fire to that cast ass body on a stretcher, and her body got that ass that a ruler couldn't measure"

Before I could start taking pictures I needed to adjust my location to make it work for the shoot, meaning I had to remove things from the room, and also add my own props.

This location was at my house in my mums dressing room, I had to transform it from a cute little design and really girly layout into something quite different. I wanted to try and make my scene as grungy as possible in the small space that we had. This is what it turned out like.

Unfortunately the pictures that I took on the disposable camera haven't yet been developed, so I can't show a contact sheet for those images that I took.

However I can show you my favourite images from this shot, witch are most likely going to be the ones that I will use in my published book. 

I really like this picture! Good eye contact of my model, a good pose and nice curve in her back. Unfortunately though you can't see all 25 lighters. Meaning I couldn't use this picture on its own for my quote although I could use it along with another picture. 

I like this shot. In the middle of the photo shoot there was a short break, in this time I took a few snaps of just the table so that everything that was on it could be seen. I really like the line of lighters that leads you down the table towards a bottle of rum. I also like how one of the 1st things you see in this picture is the gun. 

I really like this picture, how the eye contact with the model is made trough her reflection in the mirror. I only wish I had put more focus on her reflection and not in the details of her top. I can clearly see her face and pose, but I personally think that the image could have been a bit more sharp.

Although a majority of items on the table are all out of focus, I really like this picture and how all the foreground is focused. I like the different textures on the wood and the different shades of brown. 

I really like the angle that I took this picture at, it is a bit more visually exciting to look at, and we are looking down at what my model is doing instead of across at her. I love her pose and the curve in her body I think it looks really good. Also we have a full view of everything that is on the table and can see what the model is doing. I also like how although we can see the rest of her we cant see Holly's face, just this big head of hair. 

I do like this picture. It's similar to the previous picture, although this picture was taken on my phone, and not on a digital camera. I like the birds eye view we have of the table and how all the different wooden tones tie in together. The floor, the table and Holly's hair are all similar colours, letting this colour theme consist trough the picture.

Out of all the pictures I took on my phone, this is one of my favourites. I really like my models pose in this and how we can see from her face that she is stuck in deep thought, I also like the shape of this picture, as you can travel from the left to the right making observations about this picture, and how when you get to the right my models leg leads you off the picture. 

Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe - Photo Shoot

For the song 'Bitch don't kill my vibe' I was planning to take pictures to go with the quote

sometimes I need to be alone

Bitch don't kill my vibe bitch don't kill my vibe' 

I did decide to take out the 'Bitch don't kill my vibe bitch don't kill my vibe' and replace it with a different quote from the song. The quote I chose to replace this with was 

'Hide your feelings, hide your feelings now what you better do'

I decided to this to as this quote seemed more relaxed and clam that would merge better with the images I was planning to take for the 'lord forgive me quote'.

Although I was planning to use three different types of camera for each photoshoot, I only used my digital camera for this one. This is because this was one of the last photoshoots that I did for this assignment, meaning that my disposable camera has already been sent off to get developed and when in the studio I forgot to take pictures on my phone.

Out of the pictures that I took in the studio these are my favourite..

I really like this photo and the lighting on it, and how the flash off the lights has made the jewels in the rosary beads twinkle, and also how the focus is on the main section of the rosary beads.
I also like how my models top appears to look like a black backdrop, meaning that there are no distractions in the background.
I think that this picture will work well for the quote..
'Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me for the things I don't understand' as there are rosary beads wrapped around her hands and you can see that they are held as if she where praying. 
 

I also liked this photo for the quote..
'Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me for the things I don't understand' 
but I didn't feel it was as strong as the previous image. There is less detail on the rosary beads in this image and also I find that with the rosary beads being silver on a white background that it's hard to see them, maybe slightly exposed. Also the cross is facing the wring way. 

I also like this photo for the quote..
'Hide your feelings, hide your feelings now what you better do'I think that this picture will work well with this quote as it looks like she is trying to hide her rosary beads and the fact that she had been looking to God for comfort.
I like how the beads stand out really strong agains the black jumper.
Although I don't like the white background on each of the sides. If I'm going to use this image I will have to crop the edges out.

I really like this image and the colours in it. For this picture I used a grey backdrop to make the image darker.
This picture will work really well with the quote
    'I am a sinner who's probably going to sin again'
I like the way my model is making eye contact with the camera, and also how the end of the camera is pointed directly down the lens. 

I also really like this image to go with the quote
    'I am a sinner who's probably going to sin again'
I like the way you can see the gun being prepared to use, and how you can see my model is in trackies, as this is more gangster clothing. I wish that the background had been darker in this image like in the previous image, but this is something I can try and edit. 

I like this picture, but I don't think it's as good as the previous image witch is very similar. I think that the other image is better as it zoomed in more meaning that you couldn't see the bottom of my models chin ad hair in the top of the picture. 

I also like this picture for the quote
    'I am a sinner who's probably going to sin again'
but I feel that this image is too dark, and I think it's hard to see where the t-shirt stops and the gun starts as they just blend into each other.

Photo Plans / Proposal

For this assignment we have to create a published book, using at least three different types of camera.
I am going to theme by book on an album that I love called 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' by Kendrick Lamar. My plan is to read trough all the lyrics to every song on this album and pick out a at least one quote or more of my favourite quotes from each song. I will then create pictures to go with these quotes, turning them from lyrics into captions. The pictures that I will take will  either be inspired from the lyrics, meaning of the songs  and the album in general. I'll be putting my interpretation of images along side Kendrick's lyrics.
There are 14 songs on this album, but I am only going to take pictures for 11 of them. This is because two of the songs are remix's from an original song on the album and the third song I'm just not overly keen on.
To make sure that I fill my assignment criteria I am going to take pictures on 3 different cameras for every picture. Meaning that every photo-shoot I do will be taken on my digital camera, my phone camera, and also on a disposable camera.
Here are plans for each of the pictures I am going to take and the quotes that I am going to use...

For the song  'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' I'm  going to be creating photo's to go along with the quote...

 This photo will be taken on location at my models house, as we need to create the feeling that her bedroom is the characters bed room. This picture is going to consist of my model Holly as her character asleep in her bed. Although we can see that she is asleep and isn't really doing anything but then when you look around the rest of the picture you will notice more. Because she is a 'sinner' we will see things around her room that represent this such as weapons drugs and alcohol. But also because she is saying ''lord forgive me'' she will be posing asleep holding rosary-beads, this then creates the impression that she has fell asleep saying her prayers.
for this picture I am going to need a few different props. I'm going to need a realistic looking fake gun, pills and tablets all different to look like drugs, and also rosary-beads. I may need more but this is all I can think of at the minute.
For this picture my model will have less make-up as it is a night time shoot, as not many people go to sleep with a full face of makeup on, for this my model is also going to have her natural hair out.

For the song 'Backseat Freestyle'  I am only going to create one photo, this will still have a quote from the song to caption it.

The quote that I'm going to use from this song is..

My plan for this quote is to take a picture of Holly on location. The location for this picture will be a bedroom at my house. This picture will be taken at night, using only the bedrooms lighting. It will appear that my model is leaning over her dressing table, double checking her make-up in the mirror before leaving the house, she will be fully dressed up, once again in all black, as if ready to go to a party. She will be staring straight down the camera lens trough her reflection to create eye contact. to match the quote, there will be 25 lighters included in this picture. 24 will be on the dressing table and one will be in her hand as she gets ready to spark a 'pre-rolled blunt' this is where the term cast will be included. And she will be leaning over in a way that makes her bum appear larger. As the quote explains that the character has a large bum. I will have to experiment with different angles ect, but I am planning on taking this picture landscape. This will work well as Holly will be leaning at an almost horizontal angle.

4) For the song 'The Art Of Peer Pressure' I am going to create two different images each with there own quote from the song.
The 1st quote I'm going to use from this song is...

'Hot-boxing like George Forman grilling the masses of the working world'

This picture is going to be taken on location, I am planning to go round to my friends house who has a large shed in his garden. I will then ask a few more people to come round so it appears that there is a group of friends all hanging out together. Each friend I invite for this I will have to make sure is a smoker. This is because I need to create the illusion of the 'hot-box' I am going to do this by asking everyone to roll a cigarette in the shape of a joint and then everyone will have to blow their smoke out at the same time, to create a really smokey effect.

The 2nd quote I'm going to use for this song is...

'I got the blunt in my mouth, usually I'm drug free but shit I'm with the homies'

This picture is going to be taken on the same location as the previous quote location as these two tie together nicely. This picture will consist more of Holly than the rest of the people on the location. This will be here with a few of her 'homies' with a blunt hanging out of her mouth.  

For the song 'Money Trees' I'm going to be creating three different pictures, each with their own quote from the song.

The 1st quote I'm going to use in this song is.. 'Everybody gon' respect the shooter

My plan for this picture is to have my model Holly staring straight down the camera holding out a prop gun witch is also aimed straight down the lens. This shot will be taken from a low angle to make my image more visually appealing. I am also going to take this shot over someones shoulder so it makes it clear that the gun is being aimed at a person. Not being able to see the victims face will make my picture more mysterious as we do not know who they are, and also why are they on the floor? I'm planning to have some sort of light weather it be sunlight or set lighting shining from behind my model Holly. This is not to make her appear like an angel, but so that we are seeing the picture though the victims eyes. They can't see anything but Holly, and this bright light witch could potentially be light coming from heaven as this is the end of their time.
To create this picture I am going to work in the studio, this way I can play with different lighting and also get that bright light coming over my models shoulder that I wanted. I'm also doing it in the studio as there doesn't necessarily need to be a background in this picture as I want the focus to be on the story that the picture is telling, too much going on the background could distract this.
In this picture I'm going to have my model with straight hair, wearing dark eye make-up and lipstick. She is also going to be dressed all in black. I have chosen to this, as the character that my model is portraying is not a nice person, she is a dark person, and the colours that she is wearing reflect that.
Props that I am going to need for this photo are a realistic looking prop gun. I'm going to be borrowing a BB off my friend for this.

The second quote I'm going to use from this song is..

                      'Money trees is the perfect place for shade and thats just how I feel, now, now'

My plan for this picture is
Holly sat in-front of tree but cropped so you cant see the whole tree, just the trunk.
Will have money falling down from out of shot, so that in shot it looks like the leaves off of the tree are falling down on holly. because its a money tree, its notes of money instead of leaves.
I'm going to take this on location there is a nice spot on the outskirts of Barton that I know of, it's a nice quite area with a huge isolated tree. I think this will be the perfect place to use for this shot.
I'm going to use the natural lighting for this picture, I like the lighting at sun down. good colours in the sky in the background.
Models hair will again be straight in this picture, also with dark hair and make-up. theme trough out the series for dark portrayal, also adds to character as is more recognisable. Will wear a black dress as sitting under a tree for shading.
Props that I am going to be using for this picture are fake money, I'm going to print off loads of different UK money notes to the correct size and then cut them out and use them. This way if any blow off in the wind or anything like that it doesn't matter. I haven't lost any money.

The second quote I'm going to use from this song is..

                   'Drop that work up in the bushes, hope them boys don't see my stash'

For this picture I am going to have Holly on location, walking down a path with bushes either to the left or right of her. When you look twice at this picture you will then notice that she isn't just walking down the path but that she is dropping something into the bushes. I will then also have two boys walking down the path towards holly but far in the background so that there is no detail of them, just silhouettes. These will then represent 'them boys'.
This shot will be a full length shot of Holly from behind at a landscape angle so that all the landscape around can be seen in shot. This will then mean that the viewer can see everything, meaning that they are looking at this picture as if they are walking down the path behind Holly
I have not fully decided on what location I am going to use yet, I have a couple of potential options. Option one would be near the wash-lands by college. There is a long path down there surrounded by trees and bushes, this would be a good spot. But there are also good locations where I live in Belper to take this picture so I will just have to see.
Although this picture is on location, no location lighting will be used. This is because I want the picture to have a documentary style feel to it, so it may be slightly dark or grainy.
Once again, my model will be dressed all in black, but this time instead of having straight hair I'm going to have my model with her afro out, this will make her more recognisable from behind and also will add more to the picture.

For the song 'Poetic Justice' I'm going to be creating one picture captioned with it's own quote from the song.
The quote that I'm going to use from this song is...

'If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room would you trust it?'

I am planning to take this picture in the studio, creating the dark room that was mentioned in the quote. I will then have someone else's hands appearing out of the dark, looking like they are waiting to receive the host at church. These hands will then have a flower painted on them, and this is the flower blooming. There wont really need to by any make-up or costume in this photo as the main focus will be on the flowered hand and not Holly.  

For the song 'Good Kid' I am not going to be creating any pictures. If I choose multiple quotes from each song, and then try to create individual pictures for each quote then I wont be able to get all of them done in such a short time space.

For the song 'm.A.A.d city' I am going to be creating one picture with it's own quote from the song.
 The quote that I am using for this picture is going to be..

'Cocaine laced in marijuana' - 'Cocaine, weed nigga's been mixing this shit since the 80's'

My plan for this picture is to set up a table with drug related items, and then I am also going to make fake lines of cocaine using Salt, flower, or Sugar. For fake Marijuana I took some herbs out of my kitchen the one that I thought looked the most like it was Oregano.

For the song 'Swimming Pools' I am going to be creating two pictures each with there own quote from the song to caption it.
The 1st quote that I'm going to use from this song is...

'I was in the dark room

Loud tunes, looking to make a vow soon

That I'm a get fucked up fillin' up my cup

I see the crowd move'

To create a picture for this quote I am going to have a row of 3/4 glasses some full and some empty getting poured, I am going to try and capture the liquid falling into the glass. This picture will be taken on location, probably in my kitchen. I am not going to use any location lighting, I will just work with the lighting available to me.

The 2nd quote I'm going to use from this song is... 

'Nigga why you babysittin' only 2 or 3 shots?

I'm a show you how to turn it up a notch'

This picture will be quite similar to the previous picture, but more to match the caption. Now instead of only having 3/4 shot glasses there will be 9/10 and there will be bottles of alcohol in the background. This will then make the previous picture seem really small. This picture will again be taken on location the same as the previous picture.

For the song 'Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst' I'm going to be creating two pictures, each quoted with separate quotes from the song.

The 1st quote I'm going to use from this song is..
                                                                                 'And outside became pitch black A demon glued                                                           to my back whispering "Get em" I got em, and I ain't give a fuck'
For this picture I am going to be on location. I want to take this picture from a low angle with Holly standing under a street lamp looking down the lens. This will then establish that she is out in the street, darkness hiding in the light. I'm not going to use any location lighting for this picture, I will only use my cameras flash. Again my model will be dressed all in black with dark make-up. This make-up will be extra dark, as Holly will be made to look slightly like a demon. I'm going to edit her eyes in this picture to add to this effect, but will not be doing this digitally, I will be using hand manipulation.

This picture again is going to be taken on location. In my bathroom, but this will appear to be my models bathroom in her own house. In this picture she will appear to really upset and slightly bruised, either in the bath or crying over the sink. This picture is supposed to portray Holly in her characters past. From the bruises and the crying you get the impression that she is in an abusive relationship. My models make up in this image will be quite messy to create the illusion that she has been crying. This picture will be taken on location but I'm not going to use any location lighting as there is not enough space for lighting equipment in the room that I am going to be taking these photographs in.

For the song 'Real' I am going to be creating two pictures each captioned with their own quote from the song. The 1st quote that I'm going to use from this song is...

The photo I'm going to take to go with this quote will be a close up of my model Holly in the mirror applying her lipstick as if she is just about to leave the house. Her facial emotions in this picture will be confident and mischievous as if she where getting ready to go and meet a boy. This picture will be taken on location, with no location lighting. Only the lighting that is already in the room, and any lighting on my camera will be used, as the space I am planning to work in is too small to fit location lighting. My models will have her natural hair in this picture as this is signature to the character and makes her easily recognisable. She will have a full face of make-up but will not be overly done up, just a casual daily look. 

The second quote I'm going to use from this song is...

This picture is going to be made up of two pictures placed one on top of the other to crete a single picture. The first picture will be a close up of just my model Holly's eye staring straight down the camera, this will then give the viewer the feeling that we are looking trough their eyes and into hers. The second picture will be very similar to the previous picture but in this picture my model will be looking away at the floor, and her eyes will be quite sad, and will be watering slightly hopefully.

These two pictures together show emotion, as they will show us that eye contact is being broken and that she is starting to cry. This will make you question what has happened, has she received bad news off someone, has been hurt? This will make the viewer think...

I am planning to take these pictures on location, but if I get the chance I will take them in the studio as there will be better lighting for capturing more detail on the eyes.  

I think that I am also going to ask my model to wear 'natural look' fake lashes for this, as they will make her eyes look wider. 

Good Kid m.A.A.d City Research

Good kid, m.A.A.d city is the second studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. The album was released on October 22nd 2012. 
Kendrick said that this album showcases the influences of his home town. He was the kid that was trying to escape the influence, trying his best to avoid that influence, but always being pulled back in due to certain circumstances. 
The album title mainly refers to Kendrick's childhood innocence and how the notorious city of Compton, California affected his life and growing up. 
After the release of this album Kendrick revealed that m.A.A.d in the title of his album is an acronym with two meanings. Either; My Angry Adolescence Divided or more importantly, My Angles on Angel Dust. He stated that that was him, and that he had been laced in the past and thats the reason he doesn't smoke.

I really like the cover art that Kendrick had used for this album. I think it's really cool the way it's a little bit grungey and also in the style of a Polaroid picture. This makes me what to use film in my assignment as I want my work to have the same kind of feel that this cover does. I also think it's interesting that he has a hand written title on this album (the caption on the picture) instead of the usual big in your face fancy font. The creases and scratches add to the picture making it feel old and used. I also like the yellowish and green tones that are in the picture, when I take my pictures I'll have to try using different filters and coloured tones ect to create something similar to this.
The reason that the photo looks this way is because this is an actual childhood picture of Kendrick, the other people in this picture are his granddad and two uncles. I think the reason they're eyes have been blacked out is so you know that the concentration in this picture is Kendrick as a child. 

This album consists of 14 songs, these are...

1. Sherane a.k.a Master splinter's Daughter. - The description of this song is the story opens as a flash forward. K.Dot has know Sherane for a number of months by this point. He met her at a party where they flirted and exchanged numbers. They kept in contact with each other over the summer and got to know each other pretty well. He also talks about her family's history of gang-banging that made him wary but didn;t stop him from hooking up with her. At the end of this song K.Dot is driving in his mothers van, he has sex on his mind. But when he turns up Sherane is outside waiting with two dudes in black hoodies. These could be her cousins or brothers. Either way this isn't going to end well. 

2. Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe. - The content of this song doesn't advance the narrative of the album. It is told from the perspective of the present day Kendrick Lamar, who isn't happy with the state of rap music, and strives to be different by maintaining his vision. He also discusses his career so far and how it has changed life for better or worse. It introduces him as the narrator of this album, which mostly contains tales of past events.  

3. Backseat Freestyle. - This song is about being in the state and mind of a 16 year old Kednrick. Not having a care in the world, not giving a damn about a thing. But life and money are what you see in-front of you. It's not Kendrick talking now, it's him talking then.

4. The Art Of Peer Pressure. - This song is where the albums narrative really begin to set into motion, Kendrick takes us trough a vivid story of how he learned 'peer pressure' the hard way. The fact their mission is to complete a robbery without getting caught is really bad. Kendrick thinks he should never have to be in the position to complete this sort of mission, although he is influenced by his peers to think that this sort of 'mission' is necessary when you're a teenage boy in Compton. Kendrick now sees how unnecessary this was, and how he fell in to the traps of peer pressure.

5. Money Trees. - In this song K.Dot recaps the story so far. He talks about robbing the house, "Home invasion was persuasive/From 9 to 5 I know it's vacant" He mentions having sexual relations with Sherane and then bragging about it to his homies, "I fucked Sherane then went to tell my bros" He references Backseat Freestyle when he talks about rhyming to beats, "Park the car then we started rhyming, ya bish/The only thing we had to free our mind" And he talks about jumping dudes who looked like they had more money then them, "Then freeze that verse when we see dollar signs/You looking like an easy come up ya bish/A sliver spoon I know you come from ya bish" The line in the chorus "Everybody gon' respect the shooter/But the one in front of the gun lives forever" is deeply important, not just as a life motto, but in regards to the events that later take place in this story regarding Dave and his brother. It's also a reference to Kendrick's Uncle Tony, who was shot and killed at Louie's Burgers; this event is a snap back to reality from the "dreams of living life like rappers do"

6. Poetic Justice. - K.Dot has been dropped off back at home by his homies and is about to go see Sherane. He’s probably driving on the way there in his Mother’s van. He talks about her and their relationship so far — it appears they may have had some arguments, he talks about her meeting up with her girlfriends to curse him, and going out partying rather than talking with him.

The track samples Janet Jackson's "Ant Time, Ant Place". Janet, of course, starred in the movie Poetic Justice. 

7. Good Kid. - This song sets off the theme of the second half of the album — which plays of the motif of realization. K.Dot talks about getting jumped, “for the record I recognize that I’m easy prey/I got ate alive yesterday.” He discusses the negative effects of gang-culture and being unable to escape the question of gang-affiliation:“But what am I supposed to do/When the topic is red or blue/And you understand that I ain’t/But know I’m accustomed to.” Red or Blue obviously refers to the LA gangs of Bloods and Crips. The red and the blue in the second verse changes into police sirens. K.Dot talks about getting no sympathy from the cops because they stereotype him as a gang-banger, making him lift up his shirt in order to look for a gang affiliated tattoo (“I heard them chatter: "He’s probably young but I know that he’s down/Step on his neck as hard as your bullet proof vest.”) K.Dot is trapped in a violent culture and can’t get a reprieve from the gangs or the police. This leads into the following song, “m.A.A.d city.” The first two verses are also reminiscent of what Tre went through in Boyz In The Hood who was harassed by gang members (The Bloods) simply because he was a good kid and police officers (the black officer that pulled out a gun) who profiled any black man in the hood whether good or bad.

8. m.A.A.d city. - The two meanings of “m.A.A.d”:

• my Angel on Angel’s dust
• my Angry Adolescence divided 

More self-awareness and realisation of the corrupt city that Kendrick lives in. Kendrick’s recent beat-down brings back early memories of similar situations, witnessing someone with their brains blown out at a burger stand back when he was 9 (Probably talking about his Uncle Tony, or someone in a similar situation), he thinks he knows the person who did it but he censors his name. He also talks about how his cousin was killed back in 94. He talks about his Father telling him to get a job but he got fired after his friends pressured him in to staging a robbery. He gives his reason for why he doesn’t smoke when he tells a story of smoking marijuana laced with cocaine and “foaming at the mouth.”  In the final verse he tries to let the good shine through and offer respite for the youth and how they don’t have to succumb to the temptations and pressures of the street. He hopes that his experience and intelligence can do good for the youth living in similar situations. “Compton, USA made me an angel on angel dust.”

9. Swimming Pools. - Successfully walking the fine line between maintaining his artistry and appealing to the masses, the good kid details his relationship with Ms. Liquor and peer pressure. Here are some verified explanations in Kendrick's own words. http://genius.com/KendrickLamar

10. Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst. - In “Sing About Me” Kendrick takes on the perspective of two people he knows — one positive and one negative. Then, he offers his own perspective: he tells stories not to offend or please anyone else, but to be realistic; and he hopes that his story will continue to be told, too. Storytelling can bring an eternity to stories that counteracts the ephemeral nature of life.

11. Real. - This song denotes an incredibly important realisation that Kendrick Lamar has felt. The song as a whole stresses the importance of loving yourself (and how this is a necessary component of having some of the powerful insight that Kendrick describes throughout the album).  If you listen to this album you will notice how much lower, more controlled, and more mature Kendrick’s vocals sound on this song, as opposed to the higher, cracking voices he employed on the songs before (such as the immature anthem“Backseat Freestyle”), or the urgent tone used on “m.A.A.d city”. The song represents his decision to mature and his tone of voice is symbolic of that change he made.

12. Compton. - With this song Kendrick brings the album to a theatrical close by paying homage to the city that made him who he actually is.  

13. Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe (feat. JAY Z) [remix] - A remix of one of the hottest tracks on Kendrick’s critically acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d city, featuring a verse from none other than Jay-Z. This is a beautiful remix of the younger and the older generation.
